Swire Shipping’s SEA Change Initiative – Strengthening a Culture of Safety at Sea
At Swire Shipping, safety is fundamental to how we operate — at sea and ashore. Our SEA Change initiative reflects a company-wide commitment to strengthening and reinforcing a culture where safety, operational excellence, and accountability guide every aspect of our work.
Built around the principles of Safety, Excellence, and Assurance, the SEA Change initiative represents a strategic reset in how work is approached across both shipboard and shore-based teams, with the objective of embedding safer, more consistent, and accountable practices across operations. SEA Change emphasises a mindset shift, recognising that unsafe behaviours can lead to incidents and thus the importance of addressing issues early.
To support this, SEA Change promotes a proactive and disciplined approach centred on early intervention, self-verification, and consistent adherence to standards, ensuring that vessels remain inspection-ready at all times. Safety and compliance are expected to be embedded into routine operations.
What anchors this initiative is visible leadership commitment and shared safety ownership, both onboard and ashore. Masters and officers are empowered to stop unsafe work and take corrective action without hesitation, with full support from the Swire Shipping leadership. Further, Safety is positioned as a collective responsibility, and every individual – whether ashore or onboard – is accountable for maintaining safe working conditions and upholding operational standards. This reinforces our commitment to never allow operational priorities to override safety, and to keep PSC inspection readiness and safe outcomes precedent at all levels.
Swire Shipping is introducing practical changes to support this. Shore-based teams are increasing engagement with our vessels – providing more timely support and ensuring stronger oversight through improved processes such as PSC checklists. In addition, we are working towards reducing administrative burden on ship staff, allowing them to focus more effectively on safety-critical tasks. These actions will be supported by structured training.
Onboard, crews are encouraged to plan work realistically, avoid unnecessary time pressures, stop unsafe work, and verify conditions through direct observation. By identifying and rectifying deficiencies early, we can prevent an escalation of the issue.
SEA Change aims to deliver measurable improvements, including reduced crew injuries, greater empowerment to intervene in unsafe situations, and more predictable, improved PSC inspection outcomes. By strengthening collaboration across sea and shore, and prioritising the well-being of our people, we are working towards more resilient, reliable, and safety-driven operations.
