International Safety@Sea Week
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is organising the 9th run of the International Safety@Sea Week from 29 August to 2 September 2022.
This is an annual platform for MPA to engage members of the international maritime community and top practitioners to raise awareness and exchange views on maritime safety. As part of MPA’s commitment to promoting safety at sea, registration for all events are free.
This year, there are 8 sessions to look forward to including the flagship International Safety@Sea Conference, two safety forums for the pleasure craft and harbour craft sectors, the Maritime Cybersecurity Dialogue, Ferry Rescue Exercise (FEREX) Observer Programme and Industry Visits.
Winners for the annual International Safety@Sea Awards, which recognizes outstanding efforts of organizations and individuals who have played a significant part in ensuring safety at sea, will also receive their awards then.
International Safety@Sea Conference
This year’s International Safety@Sea Conference will adopt a hybrid format with option for either online or in-person participation to cater to the event’s growing international audience. The opening session on 30 August 2022 focuses on this year’s theme “Riding the Waves for Maritime Safety”.
The two hybrid plenary sessions on 31 August 2022 will discuss:
- Dovetailing Seafarers’ Health & Wellbeing with a Good Safety Culture
- Proactive Use of Data for Maritime Safety
FEREX Observer Programme
The FEREX Observer Programme makes a comeback this year. FEREX (Ferry Rescue Exercise) is a multi-agency exercise led by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to test Singapore’s operational readiness and responsiveness in the event of a ferry mishap. This year’s exercise will see the resumption of a full-scale exercise involving seaward rescue operations and landward deployment of ground resource.

Pleasure Craft Safety Forum & Harbour Craft Safety Forum
For the first time, International Safety@Sea Week 2022 will feature 2 safety forums with presentations and panel discussions involving industry leaders and government agencies. The forum organized by the MPA-Pleasure Craft Safety Work Group will touch on “Best Practices to Avoid Incidents at Sea”, while the one led by the MPA-Harbour Craft Safety Work Group will discuss “Instilling a Strong Safety Culture for the Harbour Craft Industry”.
Industry Visits
As part of the Week, MPA is arranging visits to two locations – the Centre of Excellence in Maritime Safety (CEMS) and the Wärtsilä Expertise Centre.

Centre of Excellence for Maritime Safety (CEMS)
The tour of CEMS will cover its work in re-imagining maritime safety through AI in Human Factors, Advanced Navigation Research Simulator (ANRS), Next Generation Simulator Platform (NGNS) Platform and the use of AR and VR immersive technologies in training.
Wärtsilä Expertise Centre
The site visit to the Wärtsilä Expertise Centre will cover the latest emerging technologies for vessel voyages and how real-time data, AI analytics and expert in-the-loop enable predictive insights into fleet operations, performance, and safety enhancements. It will include a sharing on how vessels’ situational awareness can be enhanced through real-time analytics and augmented reality.
Maritime Cybersecurity Dialogue
The Maritime Cybersecurity Dialogue will also be held during the week. Featuring 3 cyber security experts and practitioners from MPA, PSA and Singapore University of Technology and Design, the event will seek to address key cyber safety issues in the rapidly digitalising maritime industry including principles, approaches and techniques to enable a more secure maritime landscape

Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA)
The mission of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) is to develop Singapore as a premier global hub port and international maritime centre (IMC), and to advance and safeguard Singapore’s strategic maritime interests.MPA is the driving force behind Singapore’s port and maritime development, taking on the roles of Port Authority, Port Regulator, Port Planner, IMC Champion, and National Maritime Representative. MPA partners the industry and other agencies to enhance safety, security and environmental protection in our port waters, facilitate port operations and growth, expand the cluster of maritime ancillary services, and promote maritime R&D and manpower development.

National Maritime Safety at Sea Council (NMSSC)
National Maritime Safety at Sea Council (NMSSC) was established by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) to spearhead the drive for maritime safety on a national level, and to ensure the sustainability of safety efforts. The first priority of the Council is to address issues related to navigational safety and raise levels of maritime safety standards. The Council will also endorse safety initiatives by MPA and the working groups to spearhead safety efforts and public campaigns that will raise awareness on navigational safety and practices.

Maritime Singapore is a thriving ecosystem comprising our global hub port, shipping and maritime services, where the international community meets, and where ideas and opportunities abound. And behind the driving force of this maritime ecosystem is the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
