Mr Christian Riis

Christian Riis has been the Director of Marine Safety & Vetting at Rio Tinto since 2022. As part of Rio Tinto’s goal for a fatality and injury-free portfolio, Christian is responsible for maintaining the health, safety, environmental, welfare and human rights standards onboard the company’s fleet of 17 owned and 230 chartered vessels.

In his role, Christian leads Rio Tinto’s programmes to improve the safety and welfare standards of the dry bulk shipping industry through engagements with industry and the adoption of advanced digital tools to identify risks and prevent incidents. With over 20 years of experience across Europe and Asia including managerial roles within the tankers, offshore, dry bulk and oil & gas segments of the shipping industry, Christian brings with him a strong track record in delivering safety, operational and environmental leadership.

He is a Master Mariner and holds an Executive MBA in Shipping and Logistics from the Copenhagen Business School.
